Last week I bought Glamour – Yes I’m still bored, nothing new, still no job. And with Glamour there was this book: The Wag’s Diary. I already spotted a couple of girls reading it in the Tube over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I knew about it. But as full of prejudices as I am I discarded the idea of reading it, considering that it was even worse chick-lit that I usually read. But you know, I got it free with the magazine so why not try to read a line or two. It’s how I started, and I put the book down something like 4 or 5 hours later, done, finished, loved it.
Now, no mistake, it’s chick-lit. One thing I always do (especially when I’m not too sure about the quality of my readings), I start reading the author’s bio. And there I’ve been impressed: Alison Kervin is a writer, a top sport journalist who travelled around the world, won many awards and wrote non-fiction sport books, she was the first woman to referee at Twickenham and holds coaching qualifications in 10 sports. Not the usual chick-lit writer. Wag’s Diary is her first novel. With that in mind I started reading about the adventure of Tracie Martin, a Wag, who has been married to the Captain of the Luton team for 12 years.
At first, you want to slap her, but the writing and the style of the novel makes it really enjoyable to read and Tracie becomes loveable, still helpless but moving and funny at the same time.
It’s a good book. Definitely enjoyable. It’s like the surprise of finding a diamond in a paddle of mud, you don’t expect much and you end up laughing and crying.
For example, there was another book I bought because I saw good reviews, it’s called Gods Behaving Badly, and I’ve been really disappointed the style of the writing isn’t half as good as The Wag’s Diary’s. I’ll talk about it another time.
So here we go. That was the first book review
There will probably be a lot of others…

What is a Wag ?
